Do you want to turn your crafting hobby into a craft business? Learn how to in this blog post!
So you want to start a craft business.. you’re in the right place!
This post will show you the basic steps to get started and the most asked questions I receive about starting a craft business with your Cricut.
I was able to earn a serious income by starting my craft business as a side hustle. With the right mindset, business plan and helpful resources, you TOO can turn your craft hobby into a full-time job!
This post is about how to start a craft business with your Cricut.
I assume you’ve already created some crafts with your Cricut. So I want to make this clear: If you jump into a business immediately after getting your Cricut like I did, it’s going to get overwhelming. Start out as a hobby for at least 6 months. Discover what craft projects you enjoy creating and can see yourself making for the next 1, 3, 5 years. This is super important!
Here are the 5 Key Points to follow when starting a Craft Business:
1. Determine what product(s) you want to sell.
2. Choose a platform to sell on.
3. Know the legal guidelines.
4. Advertise and market your products.
5. Be you & just start!
WHY SHOULD YOU START A CRAFT BUSINESS WITH YOUR CRICUT?
There’s a lot to take into consideration before starting a craft business.
First ask yourself, why do you want to sell products? Is it the passion you have for crafting, how unfulfilling your current job is?
I personally started a craft business with my Cricut because I loved crafting handmade products for friends and family, and I wanted to create my own schedule working for myself. I felt like something was missing in my life and I wanted a more challenging, fulfilling career.
Starting a craft business has allowed me to:
- Quit my 9-5 job
- Pay off my credit card debt
- Network with customers (I landed a contract to make doormats in BULK!)
- Work for myself and my dreams, not someone else’s
- Fulfill my creative outlet
- Create my own work schedule
These are just a handful of reasons why starting a craft business was an AMAZING experience for me. Here are some other common reasons to start:
- It’s an Extra Income Source. In the beginning, everything I made from my craft business went back into the business. 3 years later, it pays the bills and THEN some. I can save money and it’s not my full-time job!
- Crafting is Fun. You get to create products you enjoy making and send them off to a home and happy customer. I LOVED the feeling of seeing my finished products come to life!
- You Can Turn Your Passions Into a Business. If you take away the nerves of launching and fear of failing (which, is completely normal but don’t let it stop you) you won’t have to “work” a single day. I wake up happy knowing that this is my job and I feel so lucky!
Can you see yourself starting a craft business with your Cricut? These next steps are tips to get started on launching a craft business.
HOW TO START A CRAFT BUSINESS:
1. Determine What Product(s) You Want To Sell
Once you’re more familiar with the Cricut and crafting, then decide what products you can see yourself making… all the time! It’s important to establish a niche within your craft business.

2. Choose A Platform To Sell On
Next up is choosing a platform to sell and promote your products. There are several out there and my suggestion is – DO YOUR RESEARCH!!
Creating your own website may seem scary, but a lot of website builders make that process easy and stress-free. But, if you end up choosing a 3rd party platform, please make sure you have another platform to promote your products or start an email newsletter. Why?
Because you do not own a 3rd party platform – they own you.
If you still have no idea what I’m talking about, this video here might clear some things up!
3. Know The Legal Guidelines
The not-so-fun part about starting a craft business is learning about the legal terms. Watch out for copyrighted phrases, SVG’s, and fonts. If you don’t create designs yourself, make sure you download files that have a commercial use license. I have a YouTube video about commercial use fonts and where you can find the best ones!
You also need to know when and how to register your business. This will all depend on the state you live in. This video explains everything you need to know about registering your business legally.
4. Advertise And Market Your Products
The most-asked question I get is, how do I make sales and promote my shop? Here’s some of my best tips for growing a craft business:
- Social Media. It’s FREE to create an account and it’s one of the easiest ways to get more sales! Start with one platform so you don’t get overwhelmed and learn it’s algorithm. Some popular social media websites are Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and Facebook.
- Start an Email newsletter. Another great way to update your customers about upcoming sales, giveaways, and new products is through an email newsletter. I personally use Flodesk and it’s a game changer! Sign up here to get 50% off your subscription each month!
- Attend Local Fairs. Search your local newspaper or Facebook groups to attend a local craft fair. Depending on your location, there may be more in the spring and/or summer time. Fairs can be a great opportunity to meet and network with potential customers in-person!
5. Be You And Just Start!
You’re a craft business owner and you should be PROUD to say that! All it takes is just 1 person to believe in you (and spoiler alert, it’s not your family or friends) it’s you!
If you’re passionate about what you create, it will show in your work. Don’t compare yourself to other businesses because everyone is on their own path, at their own pace. Find the fun through the stressful times and don’t be hard on yourself. You will make plenty of mistakes along the way, but that is how we grow! You got this, and I am already so proud of you.
That’s it for starting a craft business with your Cricut!
My biggest tip for you: Just Start. The only way to launch a successful craft business is to get your products out there and learn as you go. Even if it’s not “perfect” you’re still one step ahead of someone else.

This post was all about how to start a craft business with your Cricut.
Hi Amy,
I’ve been a paper crafter since 1998. I’m in the market to buy a new machine I have an old cricut which I never quite got the hang of and barely ever used, the one with cartridges. I want buy a new machine and have my eye on the cricut maker 3. I want a machine that does a lot. Do you recommend the cricuit maker 3 or do you recommend another machine.
I’m looking to start a craft business still deciding on a niche.
Thank you for your time.
Jayme
Hi Jayme! I actually made a YouTube video on this topic and compared all 4 Cricut machines. Here is the link and I hope this will help you narrow down your decision 🙂 https://youtu.be/wt7HI95pCqk
Hi Amy!
I love your content, thanks for all the helpful information and videos 🙂 i have had various crafting projects throughout the years and now decided to explore cricut. Starting a crafting business has always been in the back of my mind, but I felt like I needed to be ’passionate’ about a specific niche to do so. I feel i’m just passionate about crafting in general. Perhaps I find something I really like doing once I get started with some Cricut projects 🙂

Hi There! That’s AMAZING to hear! I was the same way, once I started crafting and experimenting with different Cricut projects I was able to narrow down which products I wanted to sell and enjoy making 🙂
